Upcoming Event: Chatham House Panel Discussion and Workshop
The Chatham House and the British Embassy in Egypt are hosting a workshop and a panel discussion on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th respectively.
Both events will be held to celebrate 25 years of the Chevening Programme. The welcome speeches will be delivered by Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Egypt, Dominic Asquith CMG.
The workshop will be titled Sustainable Urban Development: Meeting the Challenges of a Changing Climate and will host two sessions. It will take place on Monday the 8th of March between 4:45 and 8:30 pm in the British Embassy in Cairo.
The first session will be titled The Big Picture – Infrastructure and Climate Change and chaired by Claire Spencer, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House, UK. The session will focus on the environmental challenges that cities in Egypt and the world will face and the necessary costs and benefits of climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as the financial investments that are needed for such.
The second session will be titled Sustainable Cities – Building for the Future and will focus on introducing the concepts of Green Cities and sustainable design as well as the challenges it will face in Egypt and the ways to overcome them. This session will be chaired by Martin Hetherington the First Secretary (Political/Economic) of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The panel discussion titled Adapting Cities for Climate Change will focus on “the challenges that Egypt faces in adapting cities to climate change”. The focus will be on Alexandria and the importance that developing sustainable infrastructure has in combating these challenges posed by climate change.
The panel will take place on Tuesday 9th of March 2010 in the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport Abu Qir Campus, Alexandria between 11:15 am and 13:45 pm.
